Setting Aside for Ministry

Acts 13:1-3

Synopsis:     At Emmanuel we use terms like “Ministry Groups” and “Task Force.”  The reason is to stress service over meetings and working together over authority.

My sermon today looks at other terms that we need to clarify.  Sometimes we use terms that have long lost their connection to practice.  We will start with Acts 13:1-3 for an introduction of concepts and move to a clarification of terms like “laying on Hands” and “Ordination.”

The final part of today’s sermon deals with giving “Thanks” to those who have served throughout the church year and to  “Commissioning” those who are being “set aside” to serve in the church year that starts September 1.

Scripture Text (NLT):  Acts 13:1-3, 6:1-6

Courage for the Next Step

Matthew 14:28-33

Synopsis: What does a church do in celebration of its 110th anniversary after the Homecoming?  I believe it’s time to ask God for Courage for the Next Step.  Do you remember the story of Peter stepping out on faith (Matthew 14:22-33)?  I know he didn’t get very far, but he got farther than anyone else in the boat.

It is easy enough for churches, like people, to get so comfortable with the way things are that they will not step out on the faith that started them on the journey in the first place.  Courage, as you know, is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Believers always stand in need of a fresh realization of the power and presence of Christ Jesus in our lives.  Christ walking with us often beckons us to follow Him into unfamiliar places and maybe unfamiliar ways.  Believer must trust the power and presence of Christ to sustain them and if need be to rescue us.  We need a fresh experience of the grace of God in Christ Jesus that lifts us up and sets out course.

Scripture Text (NLT): Matthew 14:22-33

Scripture Reading: Matthew 14:28-31

Structural Integrity

1 Corinthians 3:10-17

Synopsis:     Let me restate the obvious, the work of the church cannot be bourn on the shoulders of one or two of its members.  It cannot because the work is too great.  It cannot because it was never intended to.  While there is only one foundation, all believers are admonished to be builders. The product of their labors will be judged by God and man as well as whether or not they labor.

Paul’s warning to believers is echoed throughout the New Testament (1 Corinthians 3:10-17).  “Be very careful” that you build on the foundation of Christ Jesus and that you build appropriately.  Be careful how, what, why, when, that and why you build.

Yes, God is watching and so are your fellow believers who are encouraging your labors both in this world and in the presence of God.  There are also those living around you who watching to see if your labors are about you or Christ.  There is just too much at stake for any believer to not do their part.

Scripture Text (NLT): 1 Corinthians 3:10-17; Acts 6:1-7; Joshua 1:7; Isaiah 28:16; Hebrews 12:1

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:24-27
