A Celebration of Discipline

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Synopsis:     This is the first Sunday of “Lent.”  That may not mean much to you if you are not familiar with the church calendar.  I want to spend our time together talking about the tradition and making suggestion for observing Lent as a Celebration of Discipline.

        Using 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 as my text I want to make a few suggestions for you to consider: 1. Setting a Goal, 2. Developing a Plan, 3. Making a Commitment, 4. Accountability Group.  Some questions that you need to ask: Doing this will make me a better …?  Doing this will be a blessing to …?

        Remember, we are moving toward Easter.  Use these next forty days as a time of reflection, self examination, repentance and renewal.  May the mark of Christ’s presence in your life stand out to those around you.

Scripture Text (NLT):  1 Corinthians 9:24-27;

Mistaken Identity

Exodus 32:1-6

Synopsis: God told Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” now go tell the people (Exodus 3:14-17).  Later the people responded, “You are who WE SAY you are” (Exodus 32:1-6).  That attitude always leads to a Mistaken Identity.  The god who is the product or invention of people winds up being nothing other than “Dead Weight” (1 Corinthians 8:4-6).  I AM gives life to believers (John 3:3-8).  It doesn’t work the other way around.

      It is easy to be distracted by human desires and human intervention.  Israel asked for a king (1 Samuel 12:20-22) so they could exalt one person to the place of God.  The people got a king and all of the weights that go along with having one.

      The bottom line for interaction with I AM is humility (James 4:7-10).  God exalts believers.

Scripture Text (NLT):  Exodus 3:14-17; 32:1-6; 1 Corinthians 8:4-6; John 3:3-8; 1 Samuel 12:20-22; James 4:7-10

Sermon Series for 2012                                              Names of God

January 29, 2012                                                         God the Spirit

God the Spirit

John 4:21-24

Synopsis: When we talk about God the Son we say Jesus is the Son of God.  It works the same way when we talk about God the Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is literally the Breath of God.

      Jesus invited believers into a relationship with God as their Heavenly Father.  He also taught believers that “God is Spirit.” (John 4:21-24)  And we learn that the Spirit is life.

      The term “Spirit” has a wonderful lesson to teach us in and of itself.  Unfortunately, English doesn’t have the same inferences as does the Hebrew and Greek.  The term can be translated “breath,” “wind,” and “spirit.”

      There are many spirits.  Many powers that lay claim to the divine, but are not.  The God the Spirit is always at war with the evil in our world and in our lives.  Who is winning the battle in your life?
