He Was the Holy Child

The Bread of Life

Isaiah

Synopsis: There are three elements used in our Christmas Eve celebration of the Lord’s Supper.  Those elements will be featured in this series of sermons from Isaiah.  Jesus was the Holy Child born to be the bread of life for whoever will come and trust him.

These are the elements of the Lord’s Table as we celebrate the Advent of Christmas.  Every time we approach this table we do so in response to the invitation of God the Father who in Christ Jesus the Son has made provisions for our wholeness and our holiness.

I begin today with the story of Phillip and the eunuch from Ethiopia who was traveling back after his trip to Jerusalem (Acts 8:26-38).  The eunuch must have felt a real connection with the message of Isaiah 53.  Was God helpless to redeem him in his exile?  Phillip began with the text and question to tell the eunuch how God had provided the answer in Jesus Christ.

Jesus came as the “manna of heaven,” the bread of life, the stuff of living, and the provision of God’s power and grace.  It would be a horrible tragedy for a believer to go through the Christmas season and forget the bread of life.

Scripture Text (NLT): Acts 8:26-38; Isaiah 53:1-12

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:5

An Apocalyptic Blessing

Jeremiah & Lamentations

Synopsis: Jeremiah was a prophet to Jerusalem at what might be considered the worse time of their history.  He lamented the situation and yet had to tell of the totality of the destruction.  Even with that he found reason for thanksgiving in the future with God.

We do that when we gather at the Lord’s Table.  We know it only in the temporary setting but celebrate what God will do in the future.  In the end, all who trust in the Lord will find glorious provisions at His table.

Scripture Text (NLT): Jeremiah1:4-12; Lamentations 4:22a, 5:19; Jeremiah 33:1-18

The Inner Wheel

Ezekiel

Synopsis: The sign of holiness cannot always be seen in external circumstances.  Ezekiel’s vision of God affirms something that God is every moving on the inside of believers and ruling above the fray of the circumstances of life.  Ezekiel saw a wheel turning in the middle of the wheel and he knew God was not trapped in the ruins of Jerusalem.  The God of Israel was ever on the move which brings up the question: what are you afraid of?

The inner wheel of God’s presence is still turning and it can keep you upright in a lop-sided world.  Is the wheel turning in your life?

Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dried bones affirms that God’s plans for His people are still firmly set and God will accomplish His purpose in and through them.  What are God’s plans for His people today and what are you doing about God’s plans for you?

Ezekiel’s vision of the glorious Temple of God sends a message for us today.  The ultimate rule or law of the Temple of God is “absolute holiness.”  We cannot get there on our own.  We must come through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus.

Scripture Text (NLT): Ezekiel 1:19-21; 37:1-14; 43:1-12
