Jonah’s Death Wish

Jonah’s Death Wish

Jonah 3:10-4:11

Sermon Synopsis: Jonah’s death wish was an expression of being out of step with the will of God.  We do not have to struggle to understand why Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh.  There were a lot of other places that suited him better.  He chose the one that was in the opposite direction of Nineveh.  Jonah told the sailors on the boat to throw him into the sea, because he would rather die than go to Nineveh.  Jonah wasn’t any happier when he finally went to Nineveh.  He was still out of step with the will of God.  He was angry enough to die.

Now consider the story of Saul of Tarsus.  He didn’t like anybody who wasn’t a Jew like himself.  His conversion experience isn’t a fish story like Jonah, but it was life changing.  Saul (Hebrew of the Hebrew) became Paul (Greek form of his name) Apostle to the Gentiles.  He never stopped preaching and reaching out to those he once hated.  Paul’s death wish was an expression of being in step with the will of God.  He was ready to go just as soon as God was finished with him on earth.

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” (Psalm 145:8.NIV)  Have you experienced his grace today?  Have you extended God’s grace to others?  Have you gone to your Nineveh yet?

May the Force be with you

May The Force Be with You

Psalm 114:1-8

Sermon Synopsis:  May the Force be with you is a line from Star Wars movies, but in this sermon it is a reference to the power of God in and among the people of God.  Psalm 114 draws on a number of Old Testament narratives to make clear that it was the presence of God among the people of Israel or Judah that made the difference in times of conflict.  In the same manner, it is the presence of Spirit of God in the church today that makes it possible for the church to make a difference in the world.  The forces of evil are not afraid of the people in the church but they know to be afraid of God.  The Spirit of Christ also makes a difference in the lives of the believers making it possible for them to be forgiven as well as to forgive.  The Force in believers transforms believers into a force the world cannot resist.

Scripture References (NIV): Psalm 114; Exodus 14:19-31; Romans 14:1-12; Acts 19:13-16; Matthew 18:21-35; Mark .

Marks of Our Faith

Welcome to the September 7 th edition of The Emmanuel Podcast. Today we dedicate a prayer garden that has been in the planing stages for the last five years. Pastor Sonny Strange speaks about the marks of our faith and we participate in the Lord's Supper.

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen.

He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far has the LORD helped us."

1 Samuel 7:12, NIV

Like Samuel in the Old Testament, we seek to establish as a witness and “Ebenezer” which means “a stone of help.”  We have selected twelve words which have been etched in stone to guide us and others in the path of pray.

Sincerely Yours; Romans 12:9

Sermon Synopsis:

We often express the words of the psalmist (26:8) “I love the house where you live, O LORD...” but how often do we show up to meet together in the presence of the LORD.  Isn’t our attendance at the times of assembly a measure of the sincerity of our love for the house of the Lord?  “Love must be sincere.” Paul writes, or it is not love at all.  In Romans 12:9-21 Paul defines the actions and sentiments of sincere love.

The greatest example if sincere love is found in the actions of Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 16:21-28).
