Trusting God in the “All Things” of Life

Sermon Synopsis: Trusting God in the “All Things” of Life

Romans 8:26-39

July 27, 2008

What does it take for a believer to trust God no matter what happens?  Answer: Faith, yes but in this context Paul wants you to answer Spirit.  It takes the Spirit of Christ in the believer to give life to faith in the “all things” of life.  Jesus said the kingdom is like yeast in flour.  In time it will be apparent that the little yeast within the flour will make a big difference in the outcome.  Life of the Spirit of Christ in believers is made apparent in “all things.”

Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

      Scriptural References (NIV): Romans 7:24-25a; 8:1-2, 9, 12, 26-39; Matthew 13:31-33.

Recognizing God's Children

Sermon Synopsis: Recognizing God’s Children

Romans 8:12-25

Are there recognizable characteristics of the children of God?  Paul starts Romans 8:12-25 with another “therefore.”  Because we are unable to save ourselves God sent His Son to establish the way of righteousness and His Spirit to birth believers into the kingdom “therefore” believers have an “obligation ... to live according” to the Spirit of Christ within them.  It is a family trait.

Another trait is that believers are gifted for special service to the body.  Gifts vary from believer to believer.  We do not all have the same gifts, but all are gifted.

God believers have a special relationship.  The children of God are recognized because they relate to the God of all creation as “Abba.”

Faith is another characteristic of God’s children.  What will be has not yet appeared, so believers wait for it.

Life Giving Spirit

Sermon Synopsis: Life Giving Spirit

Romans 8:1-11

This sermon examines the struggle between the sinful and spiritual natures.  Paul describes the sinful nature as having a mindset of death whereas the spiritual nature has a mindset of life and peace.  Outward actions come from the inward nature that controls them.  Actions, however, cannot give birth to the spiritual nature it is the gift of God.

The story of Rebekah’s struggle in giving birth to Esau and Jacob provides an illustration of how God’s promise works.  It is not based on works but grace.  God chose Jacob and transformed him into Israel.  God has chosen you in Christ Jesus and has issued an invitation of adoption.  The Spirit of Christ comes to dwell in every one who responds in faith.

      Scriptural References (NIV): Romans 8:1-11; Proverbs 6:16-19; Romans 1:18, 29-31; Romans 7:15-25; Genesis 25:19-34.

Dancing to God's Music

Sermon Synopsis

Emmanuel is commissioning 20 volunteers who make up Costa Rica Partnership Mission Team # 22.  Some of them will share their witness during the service.  The commissioning message will be followed by a prayer of commissioning and a celebration of The Lord’s Supper.  The message starts with Zechariah’s (9:9) call for the people to recognize their king who comes in righteous gentleness, not might.  In Matthew 11:16-19 Jesus pointed out that people often are more interested in what they want than being open to what God wants.  The people did not recognize Jesus when he came because he did not come and do what they wanted.  The mission volunteers are being commissioned to go with the message of God in the Spirit and power of Christ, not in the spirit and power of this world.
