Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32; Psalm 25:6-9

Sermon Synopsis: Using Ezekiel’s prophesy as a template this sermon deals with issues of personal accountability.

We live in a society that loves to blame someone else for our problems.  Psychology has been used to propagate the notion that our actions are the results of our parents or our environment.  The thief couldn’t help it.  The murderer was not in charge or fully accountable for his or her actions.  The list goes on and on and there seems to be no one who is held accountable for their actions.  In fact, there seems to be no one who is capable of holding any one accountable for their actions.

What ever excuses we offer God and others for the wrongs in our lives wrong is still wrong and “sin is still sin.”  Sin is “simply wrong” actions.  God views “sin as sin” no matter who does it.  God views “sin as sin” no matter who is impacted by it.  We all sin and we are all impacted by the sins of others, but that is not an excuse for it.

God’s solution for sin starts with “repentance.”  Maybe you have heard someone say, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”  Offering excuses to God for wrong actions just digs the hole a little deeper.  Repentance, on the other hand, opens us to God’s provisions for filling in the hole.  If you wait long enough and dig deep enough, that hole could become your grave.  Jesus is the only one to find an answer for the grave.
