Dead Man Walking

Romans 6:1-11

June 22, 2008

Sermon Synopsis: “Dead Man Walking” is what prison guards in the United States say as they lead condemned prisoners from Death Row to the place of execution.

Jesus experienced the taunting of Roman guards and a hostile crowd as he was led to be executed.  He was one of three “Dead Man Walking” that day.

Jesus was executed, pronounced dead at the scene and buried in a tomb not far from the place of the execution. Jesus is the dead man who was raised to life by the power of God.  Therefore, in one sense of the word, Jesus continues to be the “Dead Man Walking.”

The resurrection of Jesus Christ has the power to transform our human understanding of death.  Humanity lives on Death Row.

The promise of Scripture is that Jesus will continue to walk with believers on their journey to death.  It also promises that Jesus will walk with believers on their journey beyond death.  There is nothing morbid about that thought!

Paul experienced Death Row on more than one occasion.  That might be one of the reasons he considered himself to be already dead.  Not dead in the physical sense, but dead to sin.  He taught that sin has no power on those who have been “buried” with Christ in baptism.

Paul’s invited believers to “...count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:11, NIV)  Jesus invites believers to be like him, and “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28, NIV)

The believer’s sentence of death has already been carried out in our behalf by Christ Jesus.  Therefore, believers are walking away from their execution not toward it.
