Body of Honor
Synopsis: Our RAs will be performing a Flag Ceremony in the worship service as part of our Memorial Day Weekend Celebration. They will also be handing out small American flags to all in attendance.
Today churches across the nation stretchMemorial Day observance into the weekend as we pause to honor the service and sacrifice of those who have died in military service. Some of those honored died in action, others in service and many more that have died after their time of service. The freedom we have to gather and worship has been guaranteed in part by their willingness to serve.
Our Old Testament is full of stories of those who serve God and the People of Israel. They were not bystanders in God’s plans, but active participants (1 Chronicles, NLT). Both 2 Samuel 23 and 1 Chronicles 11 & 12 list the military heroes of David. Surely we are no less indebted to the heroes who have served the nation in actions that preserve our freedom. We thank god for their service.
We also pause to remember the “Christian Soldiers” of this congregation who have blessed us with lives lived in faithful service to our Lord Jesus Christ. Surely their service and sacrifice to the kingdom of God has earned them a crown of righteousness that will never fade away (2 Timothy 4:8, NRSV)
